The NFL has imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at fans during a Sunday’s contest at the Jets’ stadium.

Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.

“That was unfortunate. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

He further clarified that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”

Historical Context for Proprietor Penalties

This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:

• Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
• Former Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.

Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.
